Compensation: $64,562 – $96,843 *dependent on qualifications
Job Summary: The Harris-Galveston Subsidence District is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Geoscientist to support the District’s research and monitoring efforts. This position plays a key role in operating and maintaining the District’s subsidence monitoring network, assisting with the analysis and management of research projects, and supporting the District’s geographic information systems (GIS) programs. The Geoscientist will gain hands-on experience in fieldwork, data management, geospatial analysis, and project coordination. This position works under the direction of the Director of Research and Water Conservation and contributes directly to the District’s mission to provide reasonable groundwater regulation based on the best available science to prevent further subsidence within Harris and Galveston counties.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with data collection, equipment setup, monitoring, and maintenance of GPS stations.
  • Document field site conditions with notes, photos, and field observations.
  • Maintain GPS station manual, maintenance logs, and processed data reports.
  • Enter, organize, interpret, and perform quality checks on research data.
  • Summarize trends, flag anomalies, and prepare datasets for reports.
  • Use ArcGIS, Excel, and related tools to generate maps, figures, tables, and dashboards.
  • Support project timelines, deliverables, and documentation.
  • Coordinate communications and record-keeping across project teams.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use maps, graphs, and other graphical analyses to describe and record land surface deformation and water supply information.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related Software.
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems, such as ESRI’s ArcGIS.
Qualifications:
  • Coursework or internship in project coordination, fieldwork, data analysis, or ArcGIS.
  • Experience with geospatial analysis, mapmaking, and/or spatial data visualization.
  • Knowledge of electrical system maintenance.
  • Background in geodesy and/or surveying.
  • Familiarity with field safety protocols and GNSS equipment.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, Physical Science, or related field required.
  • At least two years of experience in a related field or work is required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Physical Demands:
  • Comfortable working in field environments; able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to traverse various terrains when working in the field.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Willingness to travel locally for fieldwork (20–40% depending on project needs).
Work Schedule:
Regular work schedule is Monday – Friday with core hours from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
